Dear friends,
Three events took place in May which were of great significance for us in St
Andrew's Church. The first two were the Parents' Night and Prize Giving for
our Boys' Brigade and our Girls' Brigade Companies.
On these two occasions it was a great thrill to see just how many boys and
girls are involved in our two companies and through them, their parents and
families.
The third event was the Annual General Meeting of the North Lanarkshire Guide
Association which was held in our church this year. In a way this had only a
vague connection with our Guide Company, but as I listened to the list of
awards it became obvious to me that our Guides are one of the best companies ,
possibly in Scotland and certainly in the North Lanarkshire Division.
This month on the 17th June we will gather for the Sunday School Prize
Giving, and I know (because I have signed all the certificates!) That we wil l
see a Sunday School to be proud of, with an incredible level of attendance
from our children.
We should never forget that the success of our youth organisations is due to
the hard work and dedication of all our youth leaders and teachers and it is
their generous service which is taking the church into our community in a
very effective way. They are making St Andrew's the church which many peopl e
who are 'not on the roll' look to as their church.
To change the subject, we have started the next stage in our renovation
project with the repair of our stained glass windows.
Over the years the windows have become damaged by vandalism and the ravages
of time and each window must now be removed and the lead replaced along with
all the broken pains. Work has begun on the lower windows and the first
pair have been repaired. When the lower windows have been repaired work wil l
then start on the windows in the gallery.
The work is being funded by a grant form Land Trust, an Environmental Body
which we have been able to access through a generous gift of funding by
Patersons of Greenoakhill. The work is being carried out by The Stained
Glass Company, a new company run by Scott Simpson who has ten years
experience in the stained glass industry. Because it is a new company with
as yet a small turn over the work is exempt from VAT.
The work of renovation is important as it as it means that there will be a
church for our people, young and old, to enjoy in the future.
With best wishes and every blessing,
Yours sincerely,
Ian G. Wotherspoon
