Dear Friends,
When I was a student in St Andrews, many moons ago, there was a Provost,
who when invited to speak on any occasion, always began ‘I remember once when I
was a boy’. I fear that as I get older
I have caught the same disease, but here goes!
I remember the school being assembled in what might have been a
quadrangle, but in fact was no more than a humble bit of tarmac, to hear the
Head Master announce the news that King George VI had died. Naturally I also
remember the bonfire and village celebrations for the coronation of Queen
Elizabeth which followed in due course (I wonder where my coronation mug went?)
When we were in Ladybank, the Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee and we
donated copious amounts of redundant and very distressed furniture to the
village bonfire on that occasion (the garage was fairly tidy for at least a
fortnight!).
Now we are preparing to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the Queen,
marking fifty years of an eventful reign which has seen tremendous changes, not
just in technology, but in society.
The Kirk Session
has been thinking about how we might mark this occasion here in St Andrew’s
Church and has come up with three main ideas.
The Jubilee falls on our Communion Sunday, which limits us a little, so
at the morning Communion the three uniformed organisations will parade the
colours (this will not be a youth parade) and following the service
there will be a simple sandwich lunch in the church hall, tickets will be on
sale soon at £1.
When the elder brings your communion card you will have the opportunity
to sign a short letter of congratulations and good wishes which we intend to
send to the Queen.
Finally, on 16th June we are going to hold a Praise Service
at 7.00 p.m. when our own choir will sing a couple of items and the music group
from Rosehall High School will help to lead the praise and contribute in their
own special way.
I hope these plans will mark an important event in the life of our
nation in a happy and dignified way.
With every blessing and good wishes
Yours sincerely
Ian G. Wotherspoon

FUNDRAISING
The Silent Auction of
Saturday 27 April raised the
magnificent sum of £2,066. Many thanks
to everyone who gave their time, goods and money to make this result possible.
CHRISTIAN AID WEEK
Once again we look
forward to Christian Aid Week, a time for hard work and effort to help the
poorest people of our world. We still
need collectors so if you can give an hour or two, please contact either Nessie
Hall or Sandra Burns.
We have been
generous in our support of Christian aid in the past and I am sure this year
will mark another generous response from our congregation and the people of
Coatbridge.
SUNDAY SCHOOL
The Sunday School trip is going to Portobello on Saturday 8th
June with buses leaving the St John Street entrance to the Hall at 10a.m. Any members of the congregation wishing to
join us should contact Joyce McClelland or any Sunday School teacher. The cost is £8 per adult.
The prizegiving will be on Sunday 16 June and the Sunday School will
finish for the summer on Sunday 30 June.
The Summer Club will commence on 7 July and I would again appeal for
helpers to run this very important part of the Sunday Worship throughout July
and August. It would assist me greatly if
anyone interested could let me know so that a rota can be drawn up in good
time.
Finally, I would
like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers and the congregation for
their support throughout the year. George McCall

Mike and Margaret Nolan write regularly with a bulletin of what is happening in Cairo. In their latest letter they tell us that the winter in over and the flooding has ceased and the weather is bright and warm. They cannot comment on the situation in Palestine in case it should endanger the work of the Church in the Middle East. The letter will be posted on the Notice Board in the Hall.
