Dear Friends,
Once again there is little
space left for my letter so here are some ‘headlines’ to tell you of future
events
NEW COMMUNICANTS: I will be
admitting New Communicants on Easter Sunday, so if anyone would like to join
the church at this time there is still time and they should contact me as soon
as possible.
SILENT AUCTION We are holding
this on Saturday 27th April. It is an important fund raising event
but it should also be great fun. Look
in your cupboards and lofts for treasures.
If you have anything you neither love nor use hand it in! Remember we
will also need lots of help on the day.
REPAIR OF WALLS AND GATE
PILLARS We now have indicative costs for repairing the walls in real stone at
over £200,000. We are now negotiating
with Planning for permission to use a stone substitute which would be a
fraction of the cost.
QUEEN’S GOLDEN JUBILEE I plan to mark
this event on June 2nd at our Communion service. If anyone has any other ideas about how this
might be done, please let me know.
STATED ANNUAL MEETING 17th March – after the service – new format – much shorter – please stay!!
Every blessing to you all,
Yours sincerely,
Ian G. Wotherspoon

Tribute
to James Fredrick Dunn
Jim Dunn, minister emeritus
of Dunbeth, died peacefully in the Wishaw General Hospital on Saturday the 12th
January 2002 after a short illness.
Jim was ordained and
inducted to Gartcosh Parish Church in 1959 and there began his long ministry in
the Church of Scotland.
Prior to his ordination he
served in the Royal Artillery in the Middle East and then worked in the Inland
Revenue.
He served as assistant in
High Carntyne were he developed a friendship with James Martin the minister,
now Dr Martin, who spoke warmly of Jim at the funeral service yesterday at
Daldowie.
From Gartcosh Jim was called
to Dumbarton High, a congregation which became part of a triple union forming
Dumbarton Riverside. It was from there
that Jim and Nan Dunn were called to Dunbeth in 1977 for what was to be his
last charge, ending with the union which formed St Andrew’s.
As his successor I am aware
of the regard that the former members of Dunbeth had for both Jim and Nan. He was a faithful pastor who touched many
lives and whose passing has brought sadness to many.
He was a man who loved
literature and scholarship, a man whose ability was put to use by Hamilton
Presbytery as it had by Dumbarton Presbytery.
Jim served as Moderator in both of these Presbyteries. In retirement Jim still served the church as
a preacher and as a locum. He visited
the elderly and housebound in Hamilton Old until April of last year.
Above all he was a family
man whose devotion to his family was an extremely important part of life.
We remember Jim as a well
loved minister, the immense attendance at his funeral bearing testimony to the
esteem in which he was held by his colleagues, former congregations, and
friends.

THE SCOTTISH

Following the Bake of Bibles we were able
to send to the Scottish Bible Society the sum of £240. A letter of thanks has been received,
together with a letter of thanks from one of the projects our money has gone to
help. A copy of this letter is on the
notice board in the hall.
A letter of thanks has also been received
in response to the coins, watches etc which the congregational passed to
Jessie. These will all be sold and
proceeds will be turned into Bibles which are desperately wanted in foreign
lands.
