Dear Friends,
On Sunday we had our Guides Thinking Day Service with the usual magnificent
turn out of all three 'Uniformed Organisations' and again, as always, perfect
behavior throughout the hour of the service - well done!
Three things follow from this:-
Perhaps it was inevitable with all this going on that there were many
visitors to our service but we must not take their presence for granted, I
believe many of them look on our church as theirs and we must treasure that.ÿ20
I believe also that their presence should remind us, if we need reminding
that we are a Parish Church with a duty to be open, warm, welcoming to all
who enter any of our doors.
With every blessing,
Yours sincerely,
Ian G. Wotherspoon
The following tribute was paid to one of our elders, Robert Shaw on Sunday
21st January.
Robert Shaw, one of our elders, died suddenly but peacefully in his own home
at 17 Quarry Street, Coatbridge, on the 9th January 2001.
Robert, who was always known as Bob, was ordained to the eldership in Maxwel l
Parish Church in 1971 and served Maxwell in his own quiet and faithful way
until an heart attack and increasing ill health sadly curtailed his ability
to take part in the active work of the Kirk Session and the eldership.
After service during the war in the army Bob returned to civilian life to
develop the engineering skills he had learned in the forces and became a
service engineer with Shanks & McEwan, covering many sites in the
Lanarkshire
area.
He was a gardener and enjoyed tending his garden and producing plants and
tomatoes in his greenhouse, though in latter years his health meant that he
had to confine himself to the lighter tasks around the garden.
He was a keen bowler and enjoyed the fellowship that he found on the bowling
green. The Men's Club of St Andrew's Church was an extension of this, and
though he was content to sit and watch, the friendship and humour of the Men's
Club were greatly enjoyed by him and he was able to attend the Club until a few
weeks before his death.
Bob was a quiet man who loved a run in the car through the Trossachs, a trip
to Rothsay or a visit to Ettrick Bay to enjoy the views across the Clyde to
Arran. He enjoyed reading in the peace of his own home. But above all he
was a family man and their help and support to him were a great strength and
joy to him.
Today we remember his service to the church as an elder and give thanks for
all that he gave to the church in his own quiet way.
Our sympathy and our prayers are for his widow Grace and his daughter Janice ,
that they may know the comfort of faith and the sure hope of Christ.

CHRISTIAN BLIND MISSION
The following is the text from a
letter received from the Christian Blind
Mission following our collection at the Christmas Eve service.
"Thank you for your recent and most generous gift of £232.50. You have
become part of a global team of people committed to demonstrating God's love
in action to the blind and disabled of our world.
It is wonderful that you have joined together with other caring people
dedicated to this great vision. Everyone is a crucial member of the team.
Whether serving here or in the field, CBM supporters are showing love through
providing medical care in the poorest areas of the world.
The enclosed 'Portrait' brochure will give you an insight into the ministry
that you have become part of. Christian Blind Mission is the world's leading
agency working for the cure and prevention of blindness and other
disabilities in developing countries.
This includes cataract surgery and the prevention of trachoma, river
blindness and childhood blindness. Tied in with these interventions are man y
education and rehabilitation programmes. You will be interested to read tha t
we also work with the deaf and physically disabled.
Knowing how much just a little care can change someone's life, your support
has made a difference."
The brochure 'Portrait' is available on the notice board in the hall.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE
The usual Whist and Beetle Drive was held on 3rd March, and the final one for
this session will be held on Saturday 7th April. These are always very
friendly nights so come along and enjoy the fellowship.
Indoor Bowling
The next afternoon game for our bowlers will be on Saturday 21st April and
slips will be given out as usual. As regards our recent match against the
Bellshill Churches, sad to say we lost by a few shots, but it was a great
game played in the best of sportsmanship and the cup is away back to
Bellshill. We had it the last time so this evens the score once more, and we
look forward to renewing our matches with them in the Autumn.
This continues to be well attended, but note that on Tuesday 6th March there
will be no class owing to the Girls Brigade Christian Aid concert.
Dinner Dance
As in the past, this was a great night-out and enjoyed by all.
Mrs J Ferguson, Convenor
THE GUILD
The Guild trip this year will take place on Tuesday 5th June to Dumfries with
a coffee stop at Moffatt. Anyone wishing to go should give their names to
Mrs Nessie Shaw as soon as possible
