Dear Friends,
One of the great sayings of the Salvation Army is 'Why should the Devil have
all the best tunes?' At Christmas and other times of the year we love to
hear the Salvation Army bands play in the streets, witnessing to a part of
the church which put good 'up beat' music at the service of the Gospel.
We live in a high tech world in which it often appears that the church has n o
part, it has been left behind. Children are often amazed to find an old
minister like me sporting a mobile phone [very handy for finding houses in
Coatbridge where the street names have been changed since my map was printed !]
I am delighted to say that our church now has its own Web Site, so if you or
your children or grand children have access to the Internet look it up at
http://www.saintandrewscoatbridge.org
- but ignore the pictures of the minister!
The Web Site was designed by Hugh McKee and contains pictures of our church
and lots of useful information. It is linked to other Coatbridge churches
and to the Church of Scotland. We have still some information to put on the
site but in the modern phrase 'It's looking good!'
It is our task to use the best of modern technology in the service of the
Gospel. The best tools we have at our disposal are still your own hands to
work, your tongues to proclaim, and your lives to show that Christ is alive
and working through us.
With every blessing,
Yours sincerely,
Ian G. Wotherspoon

TRIBUTE to Lendrick McLintock
The following tribute was paid to our senior elder, Lendrick McLintock on
Sunday 10th December.
Lendrick McLintock, our senior elder passed away in ward 5 of Coathill
Hospital on Friday 1st December at the age of 87.
Len McLintock was ordained to the eldership in Gartsherrie Parish Church,
Coatbridge on the 12th of February 1950 and for half a century was a devoted
elder, contributing to the life of the church in many ways.
Len began his working life on the railway but had a talent which could not b e
hidden and so he worked to become a teacher. His teaching career began in
Shotts but he soon graduated to lecturing at Bathgate College in Art and
Design.
This gift was also spotted by his commanding officer in the Cameronians and
his skill as a draughtsman was put to good use making maps and battle plans.˙20
Another gift was also used in his army days and that was his voice as he
entertained his comrades with his great repertoire of songs and ballads .
The great love of his life was however the church and his skill as an artist
and his gift of music were both gifts used freely and generously in the
service of his church. His membership of the Session and the Choir meant a
great deal to Len and it was fitting that at his service the hymns were
suggested by those who had sung with him in the choir over the years, and as
the coffin was carried from the church the organist played one of his
favourite solos, Beautiful Isle of Somewhere. His last public duty as senio r
elder was to switch on the newly installed floodlighting system here at our
church, he counted this a great honour and privilege.
We thank God for Len's long life of service, for his gifts of art and music
both used willingly in the service of his church. We thank God that Len has
fought the good fight of faith and now knows the reward of the faithful
servant. Our prayers are for his near and dear ones that they too may know
the strength and comfort of faith.

CHRISTIAN AID
The following is the text of a letter received from
Christian Aid Scotland
following our retiring collection:
"Thank you for sending this Christmas offering of £504.00 for Christian Ai
d.
This kindness and generosity are very much appreciated. Please thank
everyone who contributed.
This year the Christmas Appeal focuses on the West Bank town of Beit Sahour.˙20
An estimated 28 per cent of the Palestinians live here below the poverty
line, and the rate of unemployment is considered to be among the highest in
the world. Christian Aid supports both Palestinian and Israeli organisation s
in providing long-term development in areas such as human rights, health,
agriculture, trade and opportunities for women.
The recent violence which has unfolded in the West Bank, Gaza and Israel is
affecting Christian Aid's partners in the region. One such partner, The
Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees, (UPMRC) are providing
on-the-spot emergency medical services.
Hundreds of houses have been damaged or destroyed around Bethlehem. Here
Christian Aid supports the YMCA Rehabilitation Programme in Beit Sahour.
They provide education and training to adults and children living with
disabilities, and their families. The YMCA building has been hit repeatedly
by live ammunition, causing extensive damage. Currently the injured and
traumatised are being visited and their needs are being assessed for physica l
rehabilitation and counselling.
At this time, YMCA workers ask for our prayers that peace may come soon and
that the rehabilitation work is maintained."
This also is the text of a letter received from CHAS following our Christmas
Eve collection:
"I am writing to thank you and everyone concerned very much for the
generous
donation of £232.50, which you have sent to the Children's Hospice
Association Scotland. raised at your Christmas Watchnight Service. This
special Christmas present you have given to the children who use Rachel Hous e
is greatly appreciated.
I hope everyone at Coatbridge St Andrews had a wonderful Christmas. At
Rachel House, there were lots of fun and laughter and, of course, a visit
from Santa with a sack full of presents! For some families though, Christma s
can also be a sad time, because they have a child who is sick, and will not
get better. It is important for these families to be able to treasure every
minute of Christmas Day and each day after that and they can do that because
they have the help and support of the care team at Rachel House.
Thank you again for your thoughtfulness and kindness. I wish you all a
successful and peaceful 2001."
BOYS’ BRIGADE
The year 2000 ended with the Anchor boys Christmas party, a night enjoyed by
the boys and their friends which also included a visit from Santa. We have
now restarted our session and are working towards parents night. We have a
visit arranged to the adventure zone in the time capsule in January which th e
boys always enjoy.
The Junior section were taken to the pantomime in Coatbridge College where
once again the boys seemed to enjoy themselves. The juniors have already
taken part in two competitions this year. In the swimming gala the four boy s
who turned up all swan very well. In the 5 a-sides a tough draw meant we
were put out in the 1st round but again many thanks to the boys who took
part. We now move on to other competitions and will be taking part in cross
country, bible knowledge and figure marching.
The Company section night out was to the 10 pin bowling when the officers
seemed to perform better than the boys. In December the cross country was
held at the outdoor sports centre. Eight boys took part on a cold morning
but unfortunately none could finish in the first three, however Craig McHugh
has been selected by the battalion to run in the national event in March.
The company section also took part in the swimming gala this time with some
success. Kris Moore won silver in the 12/13 breast stroke, John Scougall wo n
gold in the 14/15 freestyle and Allan Sandilands won bronze in the 16/18
breaststroke. These three boys along with Chris Miller came 2nd in the rela y
and these results, along with the other boys who took part meant we finished
in 3rd place overall. Our attention now switches to scripture knowledge, 5
a-sides and P.A. Jim Elliott Captain
