Dear Friends,
We have just returned from a short break visiting our two daughters in Northamptonshire, and for most of the time the sun shone which was a nice change.
Despite all the rain and lack of sun, there have been bright spots in our summer here in Coatbridge. One such bright spot was the celebration of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee with the lunch in the church hall after our June Communion service. This was a nice event (thanks to all who worked and contributed in any way) as was the visit of the music group from Rosehall High School for an evening service which not only marked the Jubilee in a very happy way but saw our newly repaired stained glass windows dedicated.
Another happy event was the Sunday School Prize Giving which showed how the dedication of our teachers is ‘paying off’ as we see not only a big Sunday School but a very large number of our children gaining perfect attendance prizes.
In so many ways we must count our blessings and give thanks for the loyalty and generosity which is a hall mark of so many people in St Andrew’s Church. It is this that makes so many things possible.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Ian G. Wotherspoon

HARRY HAMILTON
Harry Hamilton, one of our elders and Depute Session Clerk, died at the
age of 68 in the Monklands Hospital on Monday the 27th May 2002
after a long illness which he bore with courage and quiet faith.
Harry was born in Coatbridge and qualified as an accountant. After gaining experience he found employment
with Bassett the sweet maker, but when faced with a move to Sheffield decided
to establish his own practice. As an
accountant in Coatbridge he made a large circle of friends and became involved
in the life of our community. One of
the areas of his involvement was with
the Airdrie Savings Bank, becoming a Trustee and eventually serving for a term
as President of the Trustees.
A man of many interests but with a love of music and singing it was
natural that he took an interest in the Airdrie and Coatbridge Operatic
Society, being equally at home on stage or in front of house or as
secretary. Here again Harry made his
mark, serving as President and Honorary President.
Another of Harry’s great interests was Rotary International and again
Harry served his term as President.
Harry was also a member of Drumpellier Golf Club, and enjoyed the
challenge of the golf course and the friendship of the club as he enjoyed the
fellowship and the fun of both Airdrie and Whiflett Burns Clubs.
In life Harry was a man of great courtesy but he was always a man who
was quick to give help and support to others, especially to the young. He had the gift of making others feel ‘at
home’ and comfortable.
We remember Harry above all within the fellowship of the church in
Dunbeth and after the union, in St Andrew’s.
Harry’s early involvement was with the Youth Fellowship and, through
time, with the choir, and for many years he was Covenant Treasurer. He was ordained an elder in 1973 and in that
capacity continued to serve his church and Lord with unswerving loyalty and
faithfulness both in Dunbeth and in St Andrew’s. In St Andrew’s, Harry had one
of our largest districts and was our Depute Session Clerk, always ready with
wise and kindly words.
Harry was a family man, married to Joan for almost forty one years,
father to Craig and Christine, father in law to Lorraine and Mark, we remember
them in our prayers.
One simple spontaneous tribute I heard seems to sum it all up ‘Harry was
a smashing bloke’
We give thanks for a life of faith and for a life of service to Christ
and his church.
Matt Whiteside died in a tragic accident on Sunday 7th July.
Matt joined our junior section shortly after the union and helped to establish our Company as one of the best in our battalion.
Matt had been a B.B. officer for 19 years and as a boy was a member of the 9th Coatbridge Company. When he became an officer he joined the 15th Coatbridge Company in Blairhill-Dundyvan church. He then went on to become Captain of the Company. Later, he went on the reserve officer list and continued his B.B. work helping out various Companies before taking over as officer in charge of our Junior Section.
Matt’s work in the B.B. continued with his participation in various committees within the Battalion including Marching & P.A., Junior Section special committee, Battalion executive and vice chair person in the Junior Section.
His main area of expertise was in his expedition/Duke of Edinburgh work helping many boys to achieve various stages in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and to gain Presidents badges and Queens badges.
Matt’s passing leaves a huge gap in our Company which will never be filled, but I feel it is important to continue the work which Matt began in the company. We lost not only a B.B. officer but a friend.
In closing I would like to send our best wishes to his wife Lorna and hope she will continue with her invaluable work within the Company. Jim Elliot, Captain

The new session of the Sunday School will start on Sunday 25th August when all children will be made very welcome and it is hoped that the attendances will be as good if not better than last year.
I would like to thank everyone who helped with the Summer Club. Their assistance is very much appreciated. George McCall, Superintendent
Thank you
to all who supported the Sunday Teas Sandwich Lunch for the Queen’s
Jubilee. £102 was raised. The winner of the Birthday Mouse was Mrs B
Spence. Thank you also to Suzanne
Kennedy for helping with the diary dates, to the Sunday School and to everyone
who donated food etc.
Mrs Jean Reid has agreed to host another Floral Art Demonstration on Thursday 12 September at 7.30p.m. Tickets £1.50 each are now on sale.
The Christmas Fayre will be held on Saturday 16 November. Anyone who requires wool for knitting or craft work see Jean Grant or Anna Colvin. Any new IDEAS see Jean MacDonald. This event is our main fund raiser and we hope that all the organisations will take part; and of course individuals.
The Salvation Army Band from
Bellshill will host a concert here in Church on Friday 29 November at
7.30p.m. Tea in the hall during
interval (Thanks to BB) Tickets £3.00.
We hope to continue our enjoyable social evenings of Whist and Beetle during the winter months. In the session up to Christmas these will be held on the first Saturday of October, November and December when we hope to welcome back our regulars and also new friends.
After having to bowl most of the summer in waterproofs, you are assured you will not need them for the first church game on Saturday September 7th … it doesn’y rain in the Indoor! The game will be played as usual at 4 p.m. with High Tea to follow, and slips will be given out as before.
Please
let me have your reply as soon as possible and if any other person in our midst
would like to join the bowlers, just get in touch. J Ferguson, Social Convener

I am improved and being at church is a step forward though it will be a
time yet before I have more confidence, however I am thankful to be this
length.
Many
thanks to all of you.
