Dear Friends,

Annual Stated Meeting

Last month I wrote about the forthcoming Annual Stated Meeting and the proposed change in format to make the meeting shorter and more attractive.  I am delighted to say that we had an excellent turn out this year, double last year’s and that the general opinion was that the format was better.  So I hope when next year comes round those of you who did not wait for the half hour the meeting took will stay to hear the story!

The one thing that came out of the meeting which I would stress is that we all need to give just a little extra this year to make ends meet.

New Communicants

You will see in the Parish Register that we welcomed six new communicants on Easter Sunday.  I am delighted that so many decided to join the church, and I thank them all for making the decision.

Silent Auction – Saturday 27th April 1.30 – 4.30 p.m.

This month we are holding our Silent Auction, which will be a major fund raising event.  At the moment the plan is that we will have the church hall open in the afternoons from 2.00 – 4.00 p.m. and evenings from 7.00 – 9.00 p.m. from Monday 22nd April till Friday 26th to receive articles for the tables. The sale will run form 1.30 p.m. till 4.30 p.m. on Saturday 27th April.  During this time teas will be provided in the Small Hall.  I have already been given three First World War medals for the sale and I am sure that there will be many other interesting and valuable items by the day of the sale.   Look in your cupboards and your attics to see if there is anything which you no longer need which could add a little to what I am sure will be a happy and profitable day.

With every good wish and blessing

Yours sincerely

Ian G. Wotherspoon

THE GUILD

Secretary’s Report 2001-2002

The Guild session started with our opening social on 3 October 2001 by the Muir Memorial Choir who gave us a talk on Design on Eggs, after which, I think most ladies bought one for an early start to their Christmas Shopping.  Our next meeting was Mr Brown who gave us a very nostalgic talk of ‘Old Coatbridge’ this brought back a lot of memories to the ladies along with a lot of laughs.

We’re now at November 14 where all the ladies of the Guild participated by bringing along ‘Food of the Bible’ and read out the passage in the Bible they found it in.  This was most enjoyable, and at the end of the evening all the food was auctioned off.  On November 28 we had Mr John Brady – (whose father was Rev Ian Brady previously of Gartsherrie Church).  Mr Brady gave us a very interesting talk on his work at SENSE.  Christmas Cards were sold at the end of the evening.

On December 7 the ladies of the Guild enjoyed a night out at the Malcolm Sergent Carol concert with singing and comedy thrown in.  On 12 December we closed our first half of the session with a Candlelight Supper entertained by Margaret Scott’s party of singers from Airdrie & Coatbridge Operatic Society.

The start of 2002 on January 9 we had a talk from dietician Mary Hood.  The following day the shelves of Asda and Tesco were emptied of all their healthy food giving the ladies a healthy start to the New Year.  Then on January 23 we had one of our own congregation – Fiona Marwick who told us of her own story of becoming a Pharmacist which was very entertaining especially when she finished the evening by making up a salve for Chilblains, which was given out to any lady requiring some.

We are now into February where once again the ladies enjoyed a Quiz Night organised by Moira Kyle, some of the questions caused great hilarity giving us a very enjoyable evening.  February 20 we enjoyed an excellent concert from Hamilton Caledonian Male Voice Choir performing in the Church, which was attended by about 200 people all of whom enjoyed it thoroughly.  Invitations had been sent out to all the Churches in Coatbridge and Airdrie.

Now onto our second last meeting, the favourite of all, the AGM, on 6 March, entertained in his usual humourous and enjoyable way our own minister Rev Ian Wotherspoon.  Our Closing Social on the 20 March was The Richmond Ensemble – a group of children, one in a wheelchair and the ladies of the Guild gave them their usual heartwarming welcome and that closed our session for 2002.

Our programme for 2001-2002 was varied and hopefully there was something for everyone.  If you would like to join us next year for our new session you will be given a very warm welcome.

Senga Weir, Secretary

THURSDAY CLUB

The Club finished on the 14 March 2002 after a very successful session which seemed to be enjoyed by all the members.

Our afternoon tea was held on Thursday 7 March and it was very well attended.  The excellent sum of £331.10 was raised and our thanks go to everyone who helped in any way.

Our summer outing will be to Kirkcaldy on Thursday 23 May with High Tea at the Kirkwood Hotel, Burntisland.  Buses will leave the Church at 10.30a.m.  Seats are still available if anyone would like to join us.  Please contact Mrs Stoddart or any member of the committee.

On a sadder note, we received, through her niece, Miss Madge Graham’s resignation as President of the Club, which is our loss.

Madge has been President since the Club was formed after the Union and her dedication and loyalty has been second to none.  Madge loved the Club and rarely missed a Thursday, even when it was obvious she wasn’t in the best of health.

As a token of our gratitude, the Club presented Madge with a lovely silk flower arrangement which has pride of place beside her bed in Glenmore Ward, Coathill Hospital.  She was delighted and touched by the gift.

Madge’s name will still be on the Syllabus as Hon. President as a mark of our respect for all the years she served as President.

The members of the Committee were pleased that Mrs Moira Kyle who has been Acting President during our last session, has agreed to continue as President and we wish Moira well for the future and we can assure her of our full support.  N Stoddart

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

The last social for this season was held on Saturday 6 April and we hope to resume them in October for the winter.  Meantime the committee would thank all those who supported these enjoyable social evenings during the past year.

INDOOR BOWLING

As already arranged our next church game is on Saturday 13 April at 4p.m. with High Tea to follow as usual.  This game will be the last for this season and with the approach of summer, we look forward to the outdoors.  Best wishes to all for a successful and enjoyable summer break.  J Ferguson, Convener

QUEEN’S GOLDEN JUBILEE

I am delighted that Rosehall High School Music Department under Jim McLean will be joining us for an evening service on the second or third Sunday in June (the date has still to be settled) for an evening service as part of our celebrations for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.  In the past we have been privileged to welcome these talented young people on a number of occasions and they have always added freshness and vitality to the praise and I am sure our evening service in June will be no exception

I.G.W.
